For people who subscribe to the truth of tarot readings, knowing the different card meanings can be vital to understanding the direction and feel of a tarot reading. To be a proper tarot reader, it is of course important to know card meanings for all of the major and minor arcana, in order to give a proper reading. The following is, of course, only a partial list of the major arcana cards, but can get you started on your way to understanding all card meanings.

1. The Magician

The magician is the first trump card in the major arcana and is usually associated with determination and drive. The card meanings of the magician in a tarot reading can further include a tendency toward energy and creativity, suggesting personal power, focus, and self confidence.

2. The Lovers

The card meanings of the lovers can sometimes be more straightforward than many of the other cards. In a tarot reading, the lovers often signify sexuality, passion, desire, physical attraction, or romance. In general, tarot readings often see these as having to do with a romantic relationship in some way, or some sort of union, though it can also suggest having to make a choice or sacrifice in the pursuit of these qualities.

3. The Chariot

The chariot is often considered to be a very powerful character in tarot readings. The card meanings of the chariot can range from conquest and victory to impulsivity and inflexibility. This sense of power can be related to bravery and conviction, or to egocentrism and, as a result, anxiety and discipline.

4. The Hermit

The card meanings of the tarot card of the hermit often relate to the hermetic nature of the card. Often this rings of introspection and reflection, but may also have the negative connotation of seclusion and isolation. It generally implies some sort of philosophical attitude, which may even suggest a distant or retreated personality.

5. The Hanged Man

The hanged man is a somewhat controversial card in that the card meanings of this man can be interpreted in a variety of ways in a tarot reading. Because the man is hanging upside down, the card meanings are sometimes suggested to involve new point of view or contemplation, as well as a letting go. However, because of the connections to Christ (on most tarot cards he’s hanging on a cross), he can also be used to represent sacrifice, especially when paired with other cards that promise good things. Also similar to Christ, he can represent passivity or surrender in favor of the greater good.

Tarot card meanings are at the basis of every moment of a tarot card reading. All tarot card readers are very familiar with the tarot card meanings. It is their job to know what every tarot card means in order to conduct the most accurate tarot card reading. Each represents different card meanings, so knowing the definitions of each tarot card will let the tarot card reader know the significance that a card has in a person’s life. Card meanings will help to determine what the message is that is being communicated. There are several cards that make up the tarot deck in a tarot card reading. So today, we will discuss some of the cards that might appear in a tarot card reading, after all, being knowledgeable about the card meanings is the key to the most honest reading.

I.
If you are having a tarot card reading and “the chariot” card appears the tarot card meanings associated with this card are perseverance, a journey, a rushed decision, adversity, turmoil, or vengeance. “The chariot” has card meanings that when upright, can have either positive or negative tarot card meanings. Based on what the reader feels with regard to his or her interpretation, will be the deciding factor as to which of the card meanings represents what you should take away from that part of the tarot card reading. The reverse of this card, when drawn in a tarot card reading, typically represents a few possibilities. The reverse card meanings that are know to be associated with this card are defeat, failure, last minute loss, or unsuccessful.

II.
During a tarot card reading, if “the strength” card appears, the card meanings behind this card are, first the obvious, strength, then courage, energy, determination, action, or heroism. The reverse of the card is weakness, sickness, tyranny, pettiness, lack of faith, or abuse of power. This card will tell you that you must come to terms with your inner strength because it will be much more powerful than that of your physical strength. While acting according to what lies inside of you, you will find the creative answers that you have been seeking in order to achieve a great victory.

III.
While having a tarot card reading, if “the hermit” card is revealed in the reading, it may mean quite a few things. It could possibly mean counsel, caution, vigilance, patience, withdrawal, annulment, a loner or inner strength. The reverse of “the hermit” card means hastiness, rashness, foolish acts, or immaturity. This card indicates that it is the time for you to take things easy. That means that you have to find your inner peace. It is the time to cut back on the human interaction and socialization, and come to terms with yourself and who you are as a person.
